We all may like to think our software is infallible. Sure, there may be bugs that pop up from time to time\u2026 but those bugs won\u2019t do\u00a0real<\/em>\u00a0damage. They can\u2019t, let\u2019s say, bring down every single flight in the United States. Right?<\/p>\n

Well\u2026 maybe that can\u2019t happen with\u00a0your<\/em>\u00a0software. But it did happen with the FAA this week.<\/p>\n

In a pretty unprecedented move,\u00a0the FAA was forced to ground all domestic flights due to a \u201cglitch\u201d disabling their NOTAM<\/a>\u00a0(Notice to Air Missions) program. This program is critical for pilots to be aware of potential safety issues while flying.<\/p>\n

Eventually, they fixed\u2026 the glitch (Office Space reference, anyone), but the domino effect of the systems being down ended up causing delays and cancellations throughout the entire day.<\/p>\n

Obviously, it\u2019s an embarrassing moment for the FAA. Supposedly, the cause of the fiasco was a single engineer replacing one file and bringing the entire system down. But it begs the question\u2026<\/p>\n

Why and how could a single engineer\u2019s action take down an entire system like this?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure that the FAA is diving deep into this. But it\u2019s probably a good reminder for all of us to really go through our code and systems. Could one mistake by an engineer bring down your entire product? If so\u2026 it may be time to come up with some new systems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
