But what\u2019s the number one piece of advice he\u2019s shared? Why it&#8217;s &#8220;bring the donuts,&#8221; of course. He implores Product Managers to be the ones that do this simple action to gain some Kudo points with the engineers, designers, executives, and others we work with. Norton took some time off his newsletter while working with GV (Google Ventures), but now he\u2019s back out on his own and regularly publishing on Substack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norton is simply one of the most thoughtful of product people out there who never fails to bring up at least one point per post that will make you think differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this lengthy post, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennorton.com\/essays\/ants-and-aliens-thirty-year-plan.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ants and Aliens: Long-term Product Planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Norton urges you to think in the long term. No, seriously, he\u2019s talking 30-year long-term product strategy. The post was based on a talk that Ken did at one of the earliest editions of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.industryconference.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">INDUSTRY: The Product Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside Intercom<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll see several software companies in this list with great blogs, but Intercom comes out on top for several reasons. For one thing, it\u2019s been around for a fairly long time now (in Internet years). But more importantly, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contains many posts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Product Managers will find valuable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Intercom has shifted its targeted customer from product to marketing and sales, the blog now contains much non-product content. However, dig deep into the Product &amp; Design archive, and you\u2019ll find lots of good stuff. Many of the early content was created by product leaders in the company like Des Traynor, a serious thought leader who always manages to stir something in your mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, the blog has been around for a while, so you can search way back to find plenty of good content. We recommend taking a look at \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.com\/blog\/making-things-people-want\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making Things People Want<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 to get a taste of what you\u2019re going to get elsewhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/svpg.com\/articles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silicon Valley Product Group Insights Blog<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SVPG is Marty Cagan&#8217;s home, author of the seminal Product Management book <em>INSPIRED<\/em> and its recent follow-up, <em>EMPOWERED<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/svpg.com\/articles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SVPG blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feels like Product Management ground zero. Cagan\u2019s writings take you from the basics &#8212; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/svpg.com\/product-manager-job-description\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Manager Job Description<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; to the complex &#8212; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/svpg.com\/factors-in-structuring-a-product-organization\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factors in Structuring a Product Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cagan\u2019s writings (and some posts from his colleagues in the blog) go back 16(!) years, so this blog is like a Product Management encyclopedia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The definition of product market fit is debatable. Cagan describes it as \u201conce you have achieved a threshold number (I advocate at least 6) of live, referenceable customers for a given vertical market.\u201d The rest of the post, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/svpg.com\/product-market-fit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Market Fit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is eye-opening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstround.com\/review\/product\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Round\u2019s The Review<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the best Product Management content out there comes from a place you wouldn\u2019t expect &#8212; a VC firm. First Round does a superb job <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstround.com\/review\/product\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of going really deep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into various important topics for Product Managers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Round has a novel approach in featuring posts by top product people from startups in their portfolio and others from well-known companies like Atlassian. This results in posts full of practical and actionable advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Cagan\u2019s post above, we loved reading about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/firstround.com\/review\/how-superhuman-built-an-engine-to-find-product-market-fit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how email client Superhuman Built an Engine to Find Product\/Market Fit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how founder Rahul Vohra measures this elusive metric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romanpichler.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Pichler<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Pichler is rightly a brand unto itself now such is the prolificacy of Pichler\u2019s musings <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romanpichler.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on his blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He\u2019s also the author of several books with topics ranging from Scrum to product leadership. And you\u2019ll regularly catch him on the conference and workshop circuit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pichler\u2019s blog has one of those features that expose more posts as you scroll down the page. In doing so, you\u2019ll be taken aback by how much work Pichler has put into his blog over the years. And it\u2019s all quality stuff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technical Product Management teams will especially appreciate his writings on agile development. Start with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romanpichler.com\/blog\/product-leadership-in-scrum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Leadership in Scrum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poptin-embedded\" data-id=\"e1ea36856c520\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtheproduct.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mind the Product<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team at Mind the Product can rightly be considered as pioneers in the modern Product Management space. Their community grew around the world with their Product Tank series, and in tandem with that, they produced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtheproduct.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a popular blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that explores a variety of Product Management tactics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mind the Product does a great job of getting fresh content out daily thanks to their network of contributors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one you can share with your mom to explain what you do: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtheproduct.com\/category\/what-is-product-management\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Product Management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>7)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/andrewchen.co\/recent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Chen<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chen took a blogging hiatus for a while, but ever since starting a new role at Andreesen Horowitz is back at it. But don\u2019t let that dissuade you from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/andrewchen.co\/recent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checking the blog out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; it has years of good stuff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chen is particularly adept at looking at the numbers behind product growth. Especially as they pertain to two-sided marketplaces. Most importantly, he makes complex topics digestible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a look at his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/andrewchen.co\/top-essays-tweets-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top essays and tweetstorms of 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great place to start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>8) <a href=\"https:\/\/productcoalition.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Coalition<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2015, Jay Stansell from Product Coalition has done a stellar job building a massive Product Manager resource. The site boasts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/productcoalition.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over 3,500 articles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and over 1,000,000 annual readers (are there that many of us out there?!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stansell\u2019s motivations for creating this resource are awesome &#8212; to \u201cstrive for the highest standards of editorial content, and [being] committed to creating a vibrant and inclusive learning community for anyone interested in product development.\u201d Plus, you\u2019ll see as you scroll down through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/productcoalition.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of contributors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that there are many lending to an array of opinions and points of view.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question is often asked &#8211; is a Product Manager better to be highly specialized in a certain area, or be more of a generalist. This post, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/productcoalition.com\/why-generalists-make-better-product-managers-4ac6313d43c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Generalists Make Better Product Managers,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explores that very topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>9) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sachinrekhi.com\/essays\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sachin Rekhi<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sachin Rekhi is another one-person band to make this list. He does so by posting insightful and highly readable content regularly throughout the year. As Rekhi boasts, he has written \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sachinrekhi.com\/essays\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">150+ essays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with over 2 million views sharing lessons learned from over a decade here in Silicon Valley as a product manager and startup founder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t know what you will get with Rekhi each week, but you can be assured that it will be a well-thought-out piece. Posts range from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sachinrekhi.com\/basecamp-shape-up\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thoughts on Basecamp\u2019s Shape Up framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sachinrekhi.com\/5-leadership-lessons-learned-from-jeff-weiner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leadership lessons by Linkedin\u2019s Jeff Weiner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rekhi has been posting for years, but to see his most recent work check out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sachinrekhi.com\/my-top-10-essays-of-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his top posts of 2020<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>10) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.producttalk.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Talk\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-known product coach Teresa Torres leads Product Talk. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.producttalk.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her writings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> draw on her vast experience working with various software-focused businesses like Spotify, CarMax, and Tesco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torres&#8217;s posts have practical, actionable advice that you can immediately apply to your work. And a lot of the content focuses on Product Discovery, a topic that is underserved in the product community, and it\u2019s clear that she has considered it deeply.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torres does the hard work here is assembling much of her writing relating to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.producttalk.org\/decision-making\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving Your Product Decisions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>11) <a href=\"https:\/\/productcraft.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProductCraft<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProductCraft is the content arm of Pendo, a popular Product Management platform that helps providers onboard users and enhance their experience in an app. Even though ProductCraft only launched recently, they have already amassed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/productcraft.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a tonne of quality advice and resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProductCraft has been quite deliberate in how it has approached its content strategy. Rather than simply publishing post after post to see which one sticks, they\u2019ve divided the content into useful buckets &#8212; best practices, perspectives, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We love the Debates feature where they pit one product person against another to discuss a controversial topic. For instance, are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/productcraft.com\/debates\/ceo-of-the-product\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Managers Actually the CEO of the Product<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>12) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.productplan.com\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProductPlan<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Pendo with ProductCraft, ProductPlan has invested a significant amount of time and resources into developing original content for Product Managers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.productplan.com\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their posts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> span an incredible amount of topics about product, and you\u2019ll likely see them pop up on Google when you are hunting for advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, the sheer volume of advice here is fantastic &#8211; everything from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.productplan.com\/mvp-not-minimum-product\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MVPs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.productplan.com\/product-management-certifications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certifications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.productplan.com\/roadmap-what-matters-most\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roadmaps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.productplan.com\/challenges-product-leaders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product leadership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ProductPlan is roadmapping software, so it makes sense that they can write confidently on the subject. He has single-handedly built an audience of over 50,000 newsletter subscribers, answering \u201creader questions about product, growth, working with humans, and anything else that\u2019s stressing you out at the office.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rachitsky\u2019s newsletter is a fun read, with irreverent takes on the product world alongside seriously thought-provoking advice. Every newsletter is a little different, with interviews, topic deep-dives, guest posts, and jobs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to start reading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those considering a career as a Product Manager (or even check to see if it\u2019s still right for you!), Rachitsky has written a great guide on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lennysnewsletter.com\/p\/how-to-get-into-product-management\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Get Into Product Management (and Thrive)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>14) <a href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hacker Noon<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, this isn\u2019t strictly a Product Management blog, but don\u2019t let that dissuade you from checking it out. If you are a generalist or a highly specialized Product Manager, you\u2019ll find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plenty worthwhile to read here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we like it:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s just so much to consume; it\u2019s a little overwhelming when you first hit the homepage.
